Do you know what programs are being cut from the Federal budget?

I listen to NPR and watch PBS so I know that funding for them are on the chopping block. All the anti abortion talk makes the argument about cutting funds to Planned Parenthood, but what those same people fail to mention is Family Planning itself as a whole is on the chopping block. I give the republicans credit, and you have to even if don’t like the things they do, they take small things and focus on that thing while not allowing the bigger issue become the conversation. Yesterday on Talk Of The Nation the talk focused on Planned Parenthood and someone, a female who was on her anit abortion box, suggested to take that money from Planned Parenthood and give it out to other programs that do the same thing minus abortion. The lady in defense of Planned Parenthood acknowledged it wasn’t just Planned Parenthood but Family Planning in general that would be cut. The discussion never moved on that subject at all. Why, because abortion and Planned Parenthood is the angle the republicans chose to focus on.

I think that if people, republican voters included, really looked at what is being targeted to be cut they will find it disturbing. To be fair it’s the responsibility of s as American people to find out what is really going on. We don’t though, those conservative voters who listen and watch conservative news take whatever is being fed to them as fact. Liberals and those of the lower class listen and watch other news programs trying to debate those same news reports that conservative outlets are focusing on because that is where the topic is. Not many news programs dig deeper than the cover story that seems to be the focus i.e. the topic of discussion yesterday on Talk Of The Nation. We as Americans need to really know what is being cut, the truth is online for free. People know more about Charlie Sheen breakdown and not what can possibly be cut from the federal budget and what that means to our lives. Some programs targeted are programs many people have no idea existed. Personally I myself always thought of Planned Parenthood as a place that helped ladies who were pregnant and didn’t know if they wanted to keep their child, whether thinking of aborting or giving the child up for adoption. I was surprised to hear all the other stuff they did from people who called in to the show. I also realized that depending on the world you live in you view Planned Parenthood differently. One lady called in and said she had no idea about the abortion aspect of Planned Parenthood and she had a friend who worked at the local Planned Parenthood center near her and had a free pregnancy test done. I didn’t know you could do that and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in the thinking.

Maybe we should just take time to look at what is being targeted to be cut from the government budget. I went to the Committee Of Appropriations site and saw the list, see just look and you’ll find online… Again if you look.

  1. Whoa, the documents from appropriations committee are rather taxing to read through so major props to you for putting it simply as to what amount is being proposed to cut from each dept. I’ve been searching the net all over for this kind of info. It’s been a difficult search oddly. There’s so much focus on what should be cut, and what shouldn’t be cut, and how much total amount is proposed to be cut, but no one seems to want to focus on what actually is being proposed to be cut!

I’m just personally concerned and terrified that programs like AmeriCorps and HeadStart will be cut.

Is there any way for me to know exactly what percentage of the funding ofeach dept is being cut, and/or what specific govt programs are getting their funding eliminated completely?

    • Yeah David it took awhile to hunt that information down, I had to know what was on the table to be cut besides planned parenthood, that really was ll that was being talked even on Friday. I think if the news media took the time to say what might be cut we the people might be able to change something. I agree headstart shouldn’t be cut, anything to do with familes and education should be cut. Bigger question why cut the programs why not should decrease the money that too saves on the budget? We’ll see what happens this week.

  2. A lot of these programs [do] need to reduce their spending, even if they need to continue functioning, especially when several of those programs do the same, or very similar, things. The fact is that a lot of the money associated with these programs are not going directly to the purpose they are supposed to serve, but to fund bad business behavior. One example is the FDA, which spends money targeting smaller commercial farms that do not follow the same procedures as the multi-billion dollar farm-factories. That doesn’t seem honest, does it? The FDA can be reduced to a small committee that doesn’t need $220,000,000 to run. And if we have that we don’t need the NIFA or the FAS because they’re only their to support the actions of the FDA when the FDA doesn’t have the authority to do something.
Instead of shutting itself down, they simply need to re-budget.

    • I totally agree with you Casey, I saw a few programs that could be reduced as well. For some reason politicians have it in their minds it’s all or nothing. Either cut the program completely or keep it, reducing the budget doesn’t hasn’t and will not come up at all. I just got home I’m looking at the news now about what happened, sounds like same old politics to me so far.

  3. same old story …..oh, we need to cut spending and get our finacial house in order but my special interest is to vital to be cut……….typical liberal think ….just like the original poster asserted that conservatives were all economically secure and liberals were all minorities and the economically down trodden………how dare you!…..what an incredibly judgemental and ill-informed statement to make….I hate to rock your world blackceezar but you’ve swallowed the liberal lie hook line and sinker……..there are millions of disadvantaged folks who are conservative and are from all walks of life but they get by on there own determination not depending solely on the Nanny State to care for them….spending cuts mean we ALL have to share in the sacrafice ………even you.

    • I’m not drinking the Kool-Aid at all Mr. regular Joe. I know there are conservatives who are struggling to make ends meet, and that was before Obama took office. To think or read into it that I’m saying all minorities and liberals are down trodden is way too far. If anything I’m one that believes politicians spend more time dividing our country to keep anything productive from being done, both parties are at fault. As you said and I know for fact there are those with conservative views willing to do what they need to do to make ends meet without asking for a handout. What happens is however a sound byte will have us the American public focus on the not asking for a handout part. The struggling part won’t come up unless that person is a college graduate and is now working a job paying much less than they made before.

What you’re saying and what is being shown in the news aren’t the same thing. The Tea Party movement went out of their way to state there are many college educated people who are financially secure that are part of the movement. I understand that comment was to battle off the bizarre talks of The Tea Party being filled with racist rednecks, but some one who’s a lower middle class High school graduate with maybe some college education gets lost in the shuffle. Those Americans in general no matter what party they affiliate themselves with are being lost in the mix of labels and poster children to be the face of an issue.

I take it that we’re in the same boat and from I seen in your reply, how we vote is the difference between us. If people took the time to get pass what’s being fed to us on both sides and demanding more unity of our government as a whole and less of this who side is right and who side is wrong some those programs on table would have been reduced we would have taxed that 2% and brought our troops home from a few of the places are they just hanging around at (that’s not just a Middle East comment) that would reduce the debt and we wouldn’t need to raise the ceiling at all.
